Magister Caelo ergo rusum,
I am Master of the Sky.
Animari, viri meus,
Come alive, strength of mine.
Magicae meum verke in lucem,
Knit my magic into light.
Lux da caelo grit a mille ferrit,
Spark the sky with a thousand strikes.
Time stood still as I watched the demonâs face, his mouth wide open as he took from me.
But he took no more.
Bright blue light blinded me, made me blink fast and chase the blur away. No hand was holding me against the bed anymore. The demon in front of me stepped back and looked down. Down at my hands, both of them.
The tips of my fingers were connected by a single charge of electricity buzzing with life. Tears slipped down my eyes as I reached out my hand for him. I felt the magic tickling my skin, so raw and sharp, it was going to cut through anything, just like my lightning sword.
I let it go, together with a loud breath, and the electricity charge expanded from my fingers to the demonâs chest. It touched him, and he jumped, shaking as badly as if he were having a seizure. But it wasnât a seizure.
Just like my lightning sword, my magic shaped into lightning turned him into black dust in two seconds.
The words of the spell came back to me, as clear as when Iâd heard Ezra speak them for the first time, and the letters rolled off my tongue so easily, as if Iâd practiced this spell a million times before. Lightning connected my fingers again, and when I let the magic go, it hit the demon fighting Wayne right in the back. He fell into dust by her feet, and she ran toward me, her face a bloody mess. As soon as she touched Ezra, I stepped forward, my arms raised, my magic ready.
Iâd never sang a more beautiful lullaby than that spell. Nothing ever empowered me like my magic did. It was everything to me in those seconds, as I watched it turn demon after demon into dust.
And then the scream pierced my ears, shattering my focus.
I hadnât realized, but the room had been drenched in orange light. The sun had come up, and Pearl Houston was right in front of the windows. Smoke came off her skin as she screamed her guts out, trying to free herself from the chains. Brigham ran to her, taking off his black shirt to put over her body.
The demons came at me again, so I focused on the chanting. Brigham could take care of the vampire himself, but the rest of us focused on the demons. Wilder, Julian and Bender distracted them as best as they could while I chanted my new favorite spell and turned them to dust.
Five of them were still standing when they realized that they were done. They realized theyâd lost. Adams had lost.
The demons were no longer smiling. All they did was look at me, a passive expression on their faces, and they all jumped at me at once.
While I chanted, one of them hit me on the chest and knocked me to the ground but it didnât break my focus.
